Disease X : The Next Pandemic

Disease X :  Origin, symptoms , prevention and all you need to know

Few months ago,( May, 2023)  the WHO launched an initiative to detect the list of pathogens which may cause future pandemics .
They also want to deploy more than 300 doctors to trace 25 virus families and pathogens so that the global community can invest in proper Reasearch and Development to make vaccine, research kit and treatment for future references.
Here, they also included some unknown pathogens named as – ” Disease X”. The primary aim of these health experts will be based on  scientific evidences, data collection and collaboration. The list was first published by WHO in 2017 and later updated in 2018.
Now , let’s go through the details study on “Disease X “

What is Disease X

In an interview Dr Khalid Husain ( MBBS, MD) disclosed the origin of this “Disease X”.
According to him , this is basically a hamaraging fever which was first found in ‘Democratic Republic of Congo‘ , an African Country. This dease remained undetectable after examining through all possible types of available methods. As it was unknown to all, it was named as ” Disease X” . It was  identified in the UK in  2018, in the month of February, when the World Health Organization was researching about the virus. Later, it was found  that this Disease X is the latter version of COVID-19. Although it is only a placeholder term not a particular disease actually.

Symptoms of Disease X

Here are the common Symptoms…

High hamaraging fever

‌Headche

‌Pain on joints and other parts.

‌Body Ache

‌Sore Throat

‌Chills in the body

‌Loss of taste/smell

After The Covid 19 Pandemic the WHO is closely monitoring such unknown pathogens. Their primary priority include COVID-19, Ebola, and other significant diseases.

Who on disease x
After the news was reported all over the world , Dr. Michael Ryan, Executive Director of WHO also told us that they are going to plan the vaccination initiative research for future references. The UK health researchers also wants to collaborate with them.
He also feared that this “Disease X ” is more deadly than CoVid 19, and if preventive measures are not taken at the right time time it can cause the death of nearly 5 Cr ( 50 Million ) people.

Nature of Disease X

According to various health officials ,”Disease X” could potentially be caused by a pathogen known as “X”. This disease might be linked to a zoonotic infection, possibly an RNA virus, originating from a region where the conditions favor continuous transmission due to the interplay of environment and host factors. These newly emerging or re-emerging pathogens labeled as “X” pose a significant threat, necessitating vigilant and continuous surveillance and monitoring efforts.

Experts have put forth information suggesting that there’s a potential for “Syndrome X” to be a deliberately created infectious agent for a pandemic. Unintentional mishaps in laboratories or even deliberate acts of bioterrorism could result in a catastrophic “Disease X,” posing a serious global threat, according to the expert.

Potential Pandemic Sources of Disease X

Although the proper origin is still unknown, health experts are claiming for these probable sources..

1. Adenoviridae
2. Coronaviridae
3. Orthomyxoviridae
4. Paramyxoviridae
5. Picornaviridae
6. Poxviridae

Common Characteristics

‌1. No inherent immunity in the global population.

‌2. Spreads through respiratory transmission (airborne).

‌3. Can be spread by infected individuals who show no symptoms (silent).

‌4. Current medications or vaccines are not highly effective against them (harmful).

Prevention

India faced significant challenges in battling COVID-19 due to its large population, dense urban areas, and limited healthcare infrastructure. Despite this, the country showed resilience and adaptability, implementing large-scale interventions. The pandemic led to improvements in the healthcare system, increased testing capabilities, and the establishment of dedicated treatment facilities. The government also enforced nationwide lockdowns, utilized technology for contact tracing, and facilitated vaccine distribution. So , this time also if this disease x spread in a large scale we can take the steps for prevention:

‌1. Uniform international guidelines must be developed and put into action .

‌ 2. Strict airport screening and immediate travel restrictions are crucial for containing the spread of pathogen X across borders.

‌3. Collaborative effort involving global leaders, scientists, epidemiologists, and infectious disease experts is needed to investigate, control, and eliminate Disease X.

‌ 4. Widespread testing, surveillance, and thorough contact tracing as effective tools for promptly containing outbreaks.

‌5. Make sure we can quickly get essential medical supplies like test kits, vaccines.

‌6.  Keep researching on how to prevent diseases, especially making vaccines better and faster.

‌ 7. Use a “One Health” approach, which means working together across institutions and focusing on high-risk pathogens to prevent global disasters.

Conclusion

It is  crucial for us to recognize the potential threat of Disease X. This hypothetical pandemic could arise from specific virus families, characterized by their ability to spread easily through respiratory transmission, even by individuals without symptoms. What makes Disease X particularly concerning is the lack of inherent immunity in the global population and the limited effectiveness of current medications and vaccines against it. This underscores the importance of proactive preparedness measures, including research, development, and timely distribution of vaccines, to mitigate the potential impact of such a future health crisis. Staying vigilant and investing in our healthcare infrastructure will be key in our collective efforts to safeguard public health.
