Liquid Tree Concept: A Future Innovation

Liquid Tree : Price, Advantages and Working Principle

In dense urban environments where space for traditional afforestation is limited, combating concentrated pollution becomes a critical challenge. While planting trees in forests remains a common strategy for companies and governments to reduce CO2 levels, it proves impractical in bustling cities. However, an innovative solution has emerged, thanks to the ingenuity of Serbian scientists: the concept of a “liquid tree.” This groundbreaking approach addresses the pressing need for carbon mitigation and oxygen generation in urban areas where conventional afforestation is unfeasible.

What is Luquid Tree ?

Liquid tree

A “liquid tree” is a specially designed system that incorporates microalgae within a water reservoir. It functions by absorbing carbon dioxide from the surrounding environment and utilizing photosynthesis to generate oxygen, akin to traditional terrestrial trees. This innovative concept bridges the biological processes of microalgae with the environmental benefits associated with trees, providing a sustainable solution for carbon capture and oxygen production.

How Liquid Tree Works ?

The Liquid Tree (LIQUID3) operates as an urban photo-bioreactor, it mainly works through Photosynthesis. The microalgae captures the CO2 from the environment and use sunlight to produce Oxygen and its food. Thereby effectively it works as a tree.

Necessity of Liquid Tree in Serbia

In Serbia, the cities contribute up to 75% of global CO2 emissions, primarily from transportation and building climate control. Furthermore 59% of the Serbian population resides in urban areas, a figure on the rise. Given the high population density, establishing green spaces and planting trees, crucial for urban air purification, proves to be a formidable challenge due to limited available land for landscaping. This underscores the vital role of the “liquid tree” concept in Serbia, offering an innovative solution to combat urban pollution and enhance air quality.

Advantages of the Liquid Tree (LIQUID 3)

Efficient Carbon Capture

The LIQUID 3, Serbia’s pioneering urban photo-bioreactor, employs microalgae to efficiently bind carbon dioxide, outperforming traditional trees by 10 to 50 times.

Space-Saving Solution

In densely populated urban areas, where space is limited, the LIQUID 3 serves as an innovative alternative to traditional tree planting, effectively addressing the challenge of creating green spaces.

Robust Adaptability to Pollution

Unlike many trees that struggle to survive in intensely polluted environments like Belgrade, microalgae thrive and effectively combat pollution levels.

Reduced Greenhouse Gas Emissions

By utilizing microalgae, the LIQUID 3 aids in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, contributing to improved air quality and mitigating the effects of pollution.

Bio-equivalent to Trees

The microalgae in the LIQUID 3 function similarly to trees and grass by performing photosynthesis and binding carbon dioxide, offering a bio-equivalent solution in urban environments.

Minimal Maintenance Requirements

The LIQUID 3 system requires less maintenance compared to traditional trees, making it a practical and sustainable option for urban air purification.

Enhanced Air Quality

Through photosynthesis, the LIQUID 3 releases pure oxygen, providing a natural and continuous source of fresh air in densely populated cities.

Complements Existing Afforestation Efforts

The goal of LIQUID 3 is not to replace forests or tree planting initiatives, but rather to supplement them by addressing urban areas with limited space for traditional afforestation.

Adaptability to Local Conditions

LIQUID 3 utilizes indigenous single-celled freshwater algae, well-suited to Serbian ponds and lakes. These algae thrive in tap water and can withstand varying temperatures.

Use as Fertilizer

The system requires minimal upkeep. Regularly removing the algae biomass, which can serve as an excellent fertilizer, along with replenishing water and minerals every six weeks ensures continuous growth.

Versatile Applications

Apart from urban air purification, microalgae used in LIQUID 3 have various applications. They can be employed in wastewater treatment, as compost for green spaces, in biomass and biofuel production, and in purifying air from industrial exhaust gases.

How effective are liquid trees?

Liquid Tree is very effective for its efficient carbon capturing, minimal space utilisation, quick adaptability in local conditions , lower maintenance cost, fertilizer and biomass production etc.

Which algae used in liquid tree?

Liquid Tree utilizes indigenous single-celled freshwater algae. These are well suited to Serbian ponds and lakes. These algae thrive in tap water and can survive  in varying temperatures.

Who invented liquid tree?

Serbian scientist Dr Ivan Spasojevic invented Liquid Tree.

Liquid Tree Cost

The maintainance cost is around 50 Euro/month currently. In Indian Rupees it maybe around 4500 Rs / Month.   Although it is too high to maintain a liquid tree. But in near future when the space availability will be very important for a mega city it can be very handy. Currently there is no mega city in India which is using such liquid tree. We can expect that the cost will be reduced drastically in future upto 200 Rs/ month.

Is there Any city in India Planning to implant Liquid Tree ?

From authentic soursces we came to know that Delhi Govt is planning for such trees to reduce the air pollution. Although the news may be a remour.
